Discovery Island (originally known as Treasure Island prior to V0.8.0) is the main location in Abandoned: Discovery Island Classic Deluxe, Abandoned: Discovery Island and Abandoned: Discovery Island (Jeff The Killer), and was also intended to appear in Abandoned: Origins.

Your job is to survive the Suits and Humanoids that come to life for five nights while the Supernatural Studies Association packs up and heads to your location. Due to it being abandoned, it is very unorganized.

Real Life[]

Discovery Island's real-life counterpart is located in Bay Lake, Florida[1], and its history dates as far back as 1900, in which it was referred to as "Raz Island" (named after the family that lived and supposedly farmed there). It was purchased sometime in 1937 by Florida's first disc jockey; Delmar Nicholson. He would rename the island "Idle Bay Isle", and peacefully lived on the island with his wife and pet crane until he fell ill in 1957[2]. At this point, the island was sold yet again and used as a hunting retreat under the name "Riles Island"[3] until it was bought once more by Disney in 1965 (who originally planned to call the Island "Blackbeard's Island"[4]) as part of the company's property acquisitions before building the Walt Disney World Resort.

The island was officially opened to the public in 1974 under the name "Treasure Island", and used to be a resort, until it was recognized as a zoological park and its name was changed to "Discovery Island" in 1978[4].

The island was officially closed on April 8th, 1999 (although it continued operation until July 9th of that same year), and its name would then be given to Safari Village in Disney's Animal Kingdom as both a tribute to the island itself and as a response to confusion over the location of the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction. The island still sits in the middle of Bay Lake today, completely untouched and abandoned, with many of its original structures sustaining major damage due to hurricanes and bad weather. An official statement from Disney regarding the reason for the island's closure has never been released. However, the most likely causes were a combination of poor attendance, high maintenance costs, and the newer and bigger Disney's Animal Kingdom having been opened a year prior.

After its abandonment, Disney had considered teaming up with Cyan Worlds to repurpose the island into a replica of the eponymous island from the video game Myst. Plans apparently never made it past the concept stage[5].

The island itself was also recognized as a filming location in movies prior to its closure, being used in the climax of the 1976 Disney film Treasure of Matecumbe under the guise of the Florida Key [6].

Trivia[]

  • It is easy to find YouTube videos exploring the island, and it is possible to take a boat there from Disney's Wilderness Lodge or Contemporary Resort.
    • However, if you are caught trespassing on the island, you will never be allowed to return to Walt Disney World.

Rare ambience that can be heard inside the Staff Complex.

Disney blew $30,000,000 on the place... yes, Thirty Million Dollars.

Then they abandoned it.

Abandoned by Disney

Treasure Island was the main location in Five Nights at Treasure Island: Found prior to being renamed to Abandoned: Discovery Island in the V0.8.0 update, where all Treasure Island themes were removed and replaced with Discovery Island. It also serves as the main setting of Five Nights at Treasure Island: Found Revision 1, and is mentioned in Abandoned by Disney as inspiration for the protagonist's urban exploration of Mowgli's Palace.

Just like Discovery Island, your job is to survive the Suits (Toons in Revision 1) and Humanoids that come to life for five nights while the Supernatural Studies Association packs up and heads to your location. As per Discovery Island, the location is abandoned, and very unorganized.
